Pre and Postnatal Care

Pre and Postnatal Care

Chiropractic care is a safe and effective treatment that can be very beneficial throughout pregnancy and following delivery.  During pregnancy, there are several physiological and hormonal changes that occur in the body. For example, the hormone relaxin is released in preparation for childbirth and this causes the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage of the pelvis to soften and become more pliable causing postural distortions.  The average mother’s weight gain throughout her pregnancy is approximately 25-35 lbs and this causes her center of gravity to shift forward leading to postural distortions.  As a result, the natural curves of the spine, particularly in the lumbar region, become exaggerated and additional pressure is placed on the spine and pelvis.

To stabilize the body, the hips may expand laterally, which puts increased pressure on the sacra-iliac joints.  As the mother’s body continually changes throughout pregnancy, this often results in spinal restrictions (hypomobility), pinched nerves, tight muscles, and decreased overall flexibility.  With all of the hormonal fluctuations, muscle and spinal imbalances, this can often result in the mother suffering from conditions such as headaches, neck pain, upper back and rib pain, low back pain, sciatica, round ligament and groin pain, and thoracic outlet syndrome.

Don’t let pain hold you back during this exciting time in your life! A chiropractor can provide safe, effective, and drug-free care to relieve pain by decreasing the pressure on the joints, muscles, and nerves of the spine and pelvis. Chiropractors are trained to provide treatment and up-to-date information tailored to meet the specific needs of women during all stages of pregnancy.

Massage Therapy- Pregnancy and Labour support

Expecting a baby can be an exciting but extremely demanding time in your life. Back pain, leg aches and pains, numbness and tingling, hormonal ‘ups’ and ‘downs’, sciatica, fatigue, headaches, decreased sleep and stress (good and bad).

You may find comfort in knowing massage therapy can help!

Massage Therapy can assist during pregnancy in many ways including:

  • improve maternal mood
  • decrease depression and anxiety
  • decrease pain
  • decrease stress hormones in pregnant women (including those suffering from depression)
  • decrease obstetrical complications, and
  • improve neonatal health and development

Massage Therapy can help during the labouring process and can aid with:

  • decrease pain in all three stages of labour (latent, active, and transition),
  • reduce anxiety in the latent stage,
  • reduce stress during labour, and
  • increase the quality of your experience of childbirth

Massage therapy during pregnancy can also have long term benefits as well including managing or, in some cases, avoiding postpartum depression.
